About

Thomas Newdick is a staff writer at TWZ, where he covers military aviation, defense technology, weapons systems, and international security. Based in Berlin, Germany, he reports on conflicts, military modernization efforts, and emerging aerospace technologies around the world, with a particular interest in airpower and its role in contemporary warfare. His reporting is informed by deep expertise in modern and historical airpower, particularly in Europe, with a focus on military aviation, air campaigns, and aerospace developments across the continent and beyond.

Over a journalism career spanning more than 25 years, Thomas has become known for making complex defense and aerospace topics accessible to a broad audience. His reporting combines technical expertise, historical context, and a focus on the real-world operational and strategic implications of military developments.

Experience

Thomas came to TWZ in 2020 after serving as editor of AirForces Monthly, one of the world's leading military aviation magazines. In that role, he directed editorial coverage across print and digital platforms, managed an international network of contributors, and worked closely with air forces around the world to arrange interviews, reporting opportunities, and photography projects.

Before that, Thomas spent more than a decade as a freelance defense and aerospace journalist and editor. His work appeared in a wide range of specialist publications covering military affairs, aviation, security issues, defense procurement, and military history. During this period, he also served as Germany correspondent for Defense News and contributed to publications including Jane's Defence Weekly and Shephard Media titles.

Alongside his magazine journalism, Thomas spent more than 14 years as editor for Vienna-based Harpia Publishing, overseeing books and reports focused on strategic affairs, conflicts, arms procurement, and airpower in regions including the Middle East and sub-Saharan Africa.

His editorial career began in London, where he held roles including Managing Editor at Aerospace Publishing, Assistant Editor at Combat Aircraft Monthly, and Assistant Editor at Aeroplane Monthly. Across those positions, he developed expertise in reporting, editing, fact-checking, commissioning, and managing editorial teams covering both contemporary military issues and aviation history.
