Gutted by a fire last summer, the amphibious assault ship has been decommissioned and is making the long trip to the scrapyard.
The fire burned for days and likely destroyed a ship worth billions of dollars. Now a sailor is being investigated for starting the blaze on purpose.
The blaze struck while the ship was tied up to the pier at Hudong–Zhonghua Shipbuilding in Shanghai.
A Japanese shipbuilder has unveiled a design for a future landing helicopter dock amphibious assault ship, or LHD, that it plans to pitch to the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, or JMSDF. Though the Japanese government has not publicly expressed an interest in such a vessel, this pitch comes as the country is working to expand its maritime and amphibious capabilities, with particularly notable plans to modify its Izumo class “helicopter destroyers” to support robust naval aviation operations that will include detachments of F-35B Joint Strike Fighters.
Some five months after the first pictures emerged of its keel under construction, China has launched its first Type 075 landing helicopter dock amphibious assault ship, or LHD, at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai. The speed with which the Chinese have been able to proceed with the construction is as impressive as the ship’s size, which will significantly increase the People’s Liberation Army Navy’s amphibious warfare capabilities, and the China State Shipbuilding Corporation is already building a second example.
The vessels will give China a high-end amphibious assault capability that can be used both regionally and far from home.
