Navy Confirms Boat Swarm Seen Alongside Carrier Group In This Satellite Image Was Iranian

The U.S. Navy has confirmed that “multiple” small Iranian boats followed the Nimitz class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and other ships from her strike group as she sailed through Strait of Hormuz into the Gulf of Oman earlier this month, as seen in commercial satellite imagery. The service has rejected reports that any of the Iranian craft harassed or otherwise acted provocatively toward the carrier, saying the activity was within “normal behavior patterns.” Still, the image of 18 small craft trailing Lincoln and her escorts is still a stark reminder of the inherent risks of each transit through the Strait.

The Pentagon says that personnel on the Wasp class amphibious assault ship USS Boxer knocked down an Iranian drone that came within a “threatening range” as the ship sailed through the Strait of Hormuz from the Gulf of Oman into the Persian Gulf. Subsequent reports said that a U.S. Marine Corps all-terrain vehicle with an anti-drone jamming system sitting on the ship’s flight deck brought down the unmanned aircraft with an electronic warfare attack.

U.S. Military Is Sending Fighter Jets, Recon Aircraft, Engineers, and More To The Middle East (Updated)

The Pentagon has announced it will deploy approximately 1,500 personnel to the Middle East, including fighter jets, reconnaissance and surveillance aircraft, a battalion of Patriot surface-to-air missile systems, and combat engineers. However, U.S. military officials have already clarified that some 600 personnel are already in the region and will simply be extending their tours. The deployments are in response to still largely nebulous claims form the U.S. government that intelligence showed Iran and its proxies were preparing to launch attacks on American interests in the Middle East.
