Navy Halts Plans To Give Its Super Hornets Conformal Fuel Tanks (Updated)

Israel’s F-15 “Baz” fleet is specially modified and appears to fly with an eclectic mix of air-to-air weaponry while patrolling the homeland.
The Navy says conformal fuel tanks, long-touted as a critical upgrade for its Super Hornets, may be turning out to be more trouble than they’re worth.
Boeing has announced that one of two F/A-18F Super Hornet testbeds that it is using in the development of the Block III upgrades for the U.S. Navy flew with an infrared search and track system, or IRST, for the first time late last year. This successful flight test comes as the company moves closer to delivering the first of these initial jets, which have other Block III updates installed, such as conformal fuel tanks, in the near future.
Taiwan’s Air Force has confirmed it expects to buy more than 60 new Lockheed Martin Block 70 F-16C/D Vipers and released an infographic about the fighter jets that says “See you soon!” This comes amid reports that President Donald Trump’s Administration has submitted the proposed deal to Congress for an informal review and approval.
Lockheed Martin is looking at what it would take to give the F-35A Joint Strike Fighter, and by extension Israel’s F-35I subvariant, the ability to carry two 600-gallon drop tanks under its wings as part of a larger range-extension study. This would increase their total fuel capacity by approximately 40 percent, though it would negate the jet’s stealth qualities.
With its new Block III configuration, Boeing sees a very bright future for the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler, including additional upgrades and potential foreign sales, through the end of the decade and beyond.
The company is still pitching the rebranded advanced F-16 variant as a ‘made-in-India’ contender for the country’s major fighter jet competition.
The Growlers are sorely in need of the new jamming systems, but the present pod design could create all-new issues.
The new Block III configuration is on track for the U.S. Navy, but some update options aren’t included.
