He lives near Tampa, Florida, home of U.S. Central Command, U.S. Special Operations Command.

Prior to TWZ, Howard was senior managing editor at Military Times, covered military affairs for the Tampa Bay Times and Tampa Tribune and was editor-in-chief of the Philadelphia City Paper among other jobs. Howard's work has been published in various outlets including The New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News, Philadelphia Magazine, Newsday, Wired and many others.
